Andrea Howland
Mezzo-Soprano

Praised for her “round, shiny” mezzo-soprano, “flexible, plangent sound,” and “affecting” acting (Voce di Meche), Andrea Howland is an opera singer with a special interest in new and rare works, art song, and chamber music.

2020 will see her in the role of Giovanna Ambatello in new opera The Silk City with Garden State Opera. She closed 2019 appearing as the Third Witch in previews of Verdi adaptation M*cBeth at La MaMa ETC, in preparation for the production’s 2021 US premiere. Earlier that year, she sang Mary Seton in Thea Musgrave’s Mary, Queen of Scots with the dell’Arte Opera Ensemble, as well as covering the principal role of Aleta in the company’s first-ever new commission, Princess Maleine, and the role of Olga in Eurasia Festival’s Eugene Onegin. She appears regularly in concert with Opera Collective and The Allegro Singers at New York City venues including the Nicholas Roerich Museum, Ace Hotel, and the 92nd St. Y.

2018 marked her debut with the dell’Arte Opera Ensemble as Dorabella in Così fan tutte and her role debut as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel with Opera Theatre of Montclair. The same year, she was in the ensemble in the US premiere of Salieri’s La Cifra and was chosen as the mezzo soprano young artist at the Canadian National Arts Center’s Ottawa ChamberFest under the auspices of Pinchas Zukerman.

Previous credits include the title role in the US premiere of Donizetti’s La Zingara with Amore Opera; Tisbe in La Cenerentola and Third Lady in The Magic Flute with Opera Theatre of Montclair; and Mercédès in Carmen and Soeur Mathilde in Dialogues of the Carmelites with Opera Company of Brooklyn.

Previously, she was a member of the ensemble at North Carolina Opera and soloist on the company’s Opera 101 school outreach tour.

“As Argilla the gypsy, who resolves all plots and makes things right . . . we heard pretty and vivacious Andrea Howland.”

“As her equally obnoxious sister Tisbe we enjoyed the on point performance of mezzo-soprano Andrea Howland whom we would be happy to hear again. The two nasty sisters worked well together.”

“We were most taken with the voices of soprano Heather Bobeck as Fiordiligi and mezzo-soprano Andrea Howland as Dorabella."
